Hong Kong Island is populated with a fantastic diversity of architecture. When completed in 1980 the Hopewell Centre skyscraper stood at 65 stories making it Hong Kong’s tallest building and the second tallest in Asia.
Recently Laservision was engaged by the Hopewell Centre to provide a lighting solution in order to bring the building back to its original glory.
In February of 2005, Laservision completed a turn key solution for the Centre which included, lighting design, equipment installation and project management.
In a city renowned for remarkable structures, the Hopewell Centre is unusual and distinct in style from all of the other buildings. The newly adopted lighting design enables the Hopewell Centre to stand out and come alive during the night.
Laservision’s lighting design aimed to echo the original architectural intent, illuminating the buildings unique architecture in such a way that it is unmistakably the Hopewell Centre.
Corporate advertising and branding for the building have also been utilised through the new lighting design. The design involved illuminating the buildings crown and external ribs with color changing LED (Light Emitting Diode) tube. In all, 2,221 metres of LED were incorporated into the buildings new lighting plan. The Hopewell Centre has also incorporated airborne special effects with the integration of a Laservision 40 Watt Stella Ray laser system to the building’s roof top. The Laser system enables animated beams of light to span the harbour connecting the audience on the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade. The building also incorporates fireworks during Hong Kong’s Chinese New Year and other themed celebrations.
Best vantage point: Finding a spot to enjoy Hopewell’s lighting is easy due to the host of visual effects incorporated. However, viewing is best at street level in the Wan Chai District of Hong Kong Island and from the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade which is located directly opposite the city. The promenade is easily accessible by ferry.
How are the mediums controlled? The effects incorporated into the building are simultaneously controlled by Laservision’s Digital Data~Pump II (DDP II). The DDP II is specifically designed to coordinate usually incompatible elements of the multimedia industry. Large scale multimedia include high impact mediums used to entertain the masses. These mediums include Lasers, Architectural Lighting, Surround Sound, Fountains, Water Screens, Large Digital Projection, Pyrotechnics and Special FX.
All aspects of the DDP II operation can be monitored and controlled remotely. This meaning the need to visit remote sites (such as a building’s rooftop) to update or validate hardware configurations is eliminated.
The software used to program shows on the DDP II is called Media ~Manager. This software package can be used to create, rehearse, edit, publish, preview and manage large multi media shows of any size. The new series of show control was designed to take advantage of using Fibre Optic instead of traditional copper cables to obtain high data rates over long distances.
As a result of Laservision’s continuing domination of International Attractions in 2004, the company was awarded ‘Australia’s Best Small Business’. This award was presented by David Koch and Palamedia. Laservision was also awarded ‘Team Entrepreneur of the Year’ by the Australian Institute of Engineers and ‘NSW Exporter of the Year’ for the second consecutive year in the category of ‘Arts and Entertainment’. This award was presented by Austrade and the Australian Institute of Export.
