Reem Central Park

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Commissioned by Aldar Properties, Abu Dhabi’s leading property development company, Laservision created Abu Dhabi’s first light and water show at Reem Central Park.

Reem Central Park is an AED 200 million, 1,000,000 square-foot outdoor lifestyle destination on Reem Island.

The destination required a unique activation precinct to draw high footfall and longer dwell times to the area. Particularly, near the food and beverage and retail zones of the property.

In response, Laservision created its bespoke fountain sculpture, ‘The Wave’ as well as multimedia activations to work both day and night. In effect, providing a continuous drawcard for visitors to Reem Central Park. The result is a stunning statement piece in the heart of the retail centre that transforms into an immersive entertainment experience. The attraction, which opened on 1 December 2018 provides a multi-sensory experience to visitors of Reem Central Park. Furthermore, it’s the basis for many ground-breaking productions, shows and activations throughout the year.

CREATIVE

With the initial brief of a sea-side theme with an experiential ‘wow’ factor, Laservision’s in-house creative teams worked with the modern design language of ALDAR’s Master Plan. Resultingly, they conceived the original design, narrative, art direction and theming of the installation. In addition to the concept and design, Laservision’s creative team also developed the first main show to premiere at Reem Central Park, ‘A Day at the Seaside’. Along with multiple activations, experiences and special events celebrating UAE National Day, New Year’s Eve and International Women’s Day.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

After reviewing audience traffic flows, Laservision established a position to encircle the audience around the sculpture for maximum exposure. To accomplish this, Laservision modelled various scenarios to optimise the position of the projectors and assets. Concurrently, minimising possible audience interference to the projection. The projector for the main screen was specifically positioned using a customised short-throw lens to minimise any hotspots. Mitigating audience interference in the projection zone was an additional benefit.

Laservision also included many other media effects within the experience so patrons in the retail and F&B precincts could enjoy the experience too. For example, Laservision can be credited for one of the first permanently installed, underwater projection-mapping solutions. This served to capture audiences from multiple angles. Consequently, drawing in patrons who are located in close vicinity to the feature or positioned on 1st-floor vantage points.

The projection mediums, along with atmospheric effects, fountains, lasers and high-definition audio, all add to the creation of an immersive entertainment feature for the largest possible audience. Like the water show at Reem Central Park, Laservision produces innovative entertainment attractions for a multitude of global clients.

TECHNICAL

BESPOKE TECHNOLOGY SCULPTURE

‘The Wave’ is a bespoke technology sculpture that melds beautiful modern art with the latest in entertainment technologies. This eye-catching art piece, at over 4-metres tall is the centrepiece for daily and nightly shows in Reem Central Park.

From daytime activations featuring relaxing ambient fountain states and ‘jazzy’ musical fountain shows to night-time entertainment events and activation, ‘The Wave’ adds a unique and enticing element at the heart of Reem Central Park.

The intricate shape and structure of ‘The Wave’ also needed to discretely house a myriad of multimedia technologies. As one of the most complex elements of the design and installation process this was no easy feat. Fountains, pumps, LED lighting, as well as Laservision’s 9-metre, custom integrated water-curtain needed to be precisely engineered into the structure without compromising the design aesthetic.
