Unique Sounds of Leipzig

NEWS_Unique Sounds of Leipzig

In a world first, Laservision recently transformed the facade of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre into an interactive piece of musical art.

Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Laser Light Show, Multimedia Attraction - Laservision

As part of the Hong Kong Arts Festival Laservision, in conjunction with Leipzig Liberty, created a breathtaking 10-minute laser sequence on the Cultural Centre by transforming the unique sounds of the Leipzig Opera, Leipzig’s Gewandhaus and the St Thomas Boys Choir into a graphical representation using complex mathematical algorithms.

The 6,000m² façade of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre provided the perfect arena to place the unique music of Leipzig’s musical institutions directly in the spotlight.

Leipzig Liberty developed the concept of “Sound-Equals-Light” and engaged Laservision as the technical consultant and equipment provider in order to bring their concept to life.

“Laservision’s laser show achieved just what we, as the city’s representatives, considered important: to reach a broad public, to appeal to the senses and to market Leipzig as the City of Culture to the people there with a congenial show”, said Mr Burkhard Jung, the Mayor of Leipzig City.

Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Laser Light Show, Multimedia Attraction - Laservision

Leipzig is known as one of the major European city-centres of learning and culture in fields such as astronomy, optics and music. The “Sound-Equals-Light” project was developed to achieve three key objectives:

  • Increase public awareness of Leipzig as a cultural hub in Europe
  • Audiences associating our city inextricably with music, recognising Leipzig as one of Germany’s most important metropolitan musical centres
  • Increase public awareness of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the St Thomas Boys Choir and Opera

The “Sound-Equals-Light” artists Ludwig Schmidtpeter and Tim Grünewald, were intimately interested in the “contract between the ‘old‘ sound technology of classical music and the ultra-modern laser technology of the 21st century. With the show, we want to create links between space (West to East) and time (classical to modern).

The piece de resistance of the development, the Sands Skypark, containing the luxury 150-metre long infinity-edge swimming pool, was dramatically lit from 200 metres below, creating a rippling effect beneath the structure enhancing the architect’s vision of this iconic feature representing a floating ship in the night sky.

The Art Science Museum’s “open palm” inspired design was illuminated in a subtle display of colours acting as a symbolic gesture of welcome to guests from across the globe. Multiple search lights radiating from the museum’s water oculus extended several kilometres skywards as a beacon from across the bay and was complemented by twelve 15 metre-high flame effects dancing on the tips of the museum’s fingers captivating the audiences gathered along the One Fullerton promenade.

To entertain the audiences from across the bay, Laservision installed seven high powered Laservision Light~Ray and Stella~Ray laser systems. The full colour and gold laser systems projected sheets of light and high intense beams from the event plaza area across the entire bay.

Over 1,000 of the world’s international media attended the Opening Ceremony, including Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of LVSC, Mr Sheldon G. Adelson. Mr Adelson commented on the opening of the Integrated Resort that “MBS will now be the reference point by which all new tourism projects are judged…..and will change the conservative perception of what Singapore has in the night time.

It is expected between 125,000 and 150,000 people per day will visit the Integrated Resort and Chief Operating Office, Mr Mike Leven, has forecast annual revenue of US$1 billion, recouping its investment in just four to five years.

The ‘Nexxus’ of the Hong Kong Business District!

NexxusBuilding,HongKong,energyefficientLEDArchitecturalLighting Laservision

Laservision was engaged by Mutual Capital Limited to create, design and install a state-of-the-art dynamic lighting design that would demand the attention of passersby, whilst maintaining the natural grandeur and iconic physical characteristics of the Nexxus Building in Hong Kong.

The end result is a breathtaking lighting design capable of supporting text, graphics and images. The lighting design uses over 1,000 high-powered LED fixtures in conjunction with nearly a kilometre of LED graphics strip and has set a new benchmark for architectural lighting.

Nexxus Building, Hong Kong, energy efficient LED Architectural Lighting - Laservision

Upon acquisition, the rundown 1960’s building undertook a dramatic transformation which included the complete refurbishment of the curtain wall (facade). The refurbished building now stands as one of the most prominent buildings in the Hong Kong business district.

The Nexxus Building contained a number of design challenges and technical obstacles that had to be overcome and be incorporated into an aesthetically pleasing and eye-catching lighting design.

These challenges included:

• the highly reflective nature of the building’s façade
• light trespass issues
• energy efficient lighting design
• the ability to view the lighting design from oblique angles

The glass façade of the building does not allow for more conventional wash lighting and as such, a customised LED product was developed and installed to cater for the building’s design. The architecturally designed ‘fins’ located on the façade of the building are a prominent feature throughout the day time, however, during the night they are lost amongst the sea of glass. Using the latest LED strip lighting technologies, Laservision’s lighting design illuminates the iconic physical characteristics that are unmistakably the Nexxus Building.

Due to the building’s location, light trespass issues (or light pollution) played an important factor in the design. Light pollution may be simply defined as the misdirection of light, most often caused by poorly designed lighting fixtures which not only light the intended object but surrounding objects as well. The lighting design on the Nexxus Building utilises a variety of custom fixtures to ensure the light source is only projected forwards; therefore each fixture acts as its own single point light source, minimising light trespass.

The shift in global climate trends, and an international focus on sustainable energy has seen architectural lighting designs adopting energy efficient technologies and fixtures as a means of retrofitting new or old structures for modern times. These latest energy-efficient technologies have been utilised and synchronised to create this massive video wall in the heart of Hong Kong.

The customised lighting fixtures on the Nexxus Building were designed to be incorporated into the curtain wall (façade) whilst it was being erected during refurbishment; therefore reducing the time taken for installation, whilst reducing associated costs. Whether it is a refurbishment of an old building or the construction of a new skyscraper, Laservision’s customised lighting fixtures may be incorporated into the building’s design with no delays to the ongoing construction program.

Phases three and four have seen the incorporation of ten new buildings into the show. New standout buildings include Canon in Oterprise Square, Standard Chartered Bank, Bank of America Tower, Emax, K11 and the Horizon Hotels. The expanded show has incorporated 11 new searchlights installed on Harbour City, Langham Place, Emax, and the installation of a high-intensity Stella~Ray II laser system onto the K11 skyscraper which is currently under construction on the Kowloon side. This is the first laser system to be included on the Kowloon side which provides impact to those audiences viewing the show from Hong Kong Island.

A recent survey conducted by the HKTC on the impact of the show on tourism revealed “the ‘Symphony of Lights’ spectacular increased the length of stay by tourists in Hong Kong by 1.4 days.”

Spectators are taken on a journey through the five themes of the show commencing with Awakening, followed by Energy, Heritage, Partnership and climaxing with Celebration as both sides of the Harbour unify to rejoice Asia’s world city. The best viewing locations of the expanded show include the Golden Bauhinia Square Promenade in Wan Chai, the Avenue of Stars and Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade in Kowloon. Spectators also have the option to listen to the specially composed music via dialling in on a mobile phone. Listening options include English, Cantonese or Mandarin.

Energy efficient lighting design has been the focus of Laservision’s design team over the past two years. The impressive Canon Building, Hopewell Centre and the Standard Chartered Bank are products of this new evolution.

The Canon Building in Oterprise Square, Kowloon, utilises Laservision’s latest LED technology and has set the benchmark for environmentally sustainable skyscraper lighting. The final view provides spectators with intensely bright colour changing effects, regardless of viewing position.

Through the use of innovative LED technology, the building has become an interactive canvas for corporate colours and branding as they rotate 360 degrees around the centre.

Standard Chartered Bank’s lighting design reflects the corporate colours of the organisation, increasing its identity and distinguishing it from its close proximity ‘banking’ neighbours. The energy-efficient design uses LED strip lighting to emphasise the lines of the building which are otherwise lost at night.

The inclusion of the latest buildings in the ‘Symphony of Lights’ has dramatically increased the enormity of this spectacular show as buildings located either side of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour erupt nightly in an impressive display of colour and firepower.
